The Naga Apalala

Apalala was an Indian naga - a serpent-like creature with two legs, no wings and a human head.
He lived by the Swat river and was guardian of the source of the Subhavastu river.

Legend tells that Apalala was unhappy with life. One day the Buddha himself came by and spoke with Apalala. Apalala was converted to Buddhism and found contentment.

In gratitude, Apalala began using his charms to keep the other powerful dragons of the area in check and protect the people of the region.

At first the people were grateful and offered him tribute. But in time they began to take him for granted and eventually forgot about him. This angered Apalala. He turned against humanity and prayed to become a posionous dragon, causing storms and destroying the land.
