Christmas Dragon
Dragons seem to have become a popular part of the Western Christmas tradition. Western dragons, it seems, love to dress up in Santa hats and carry gifts wrapped up in shiny paper. The dragon is a staple feature of Christmas cards and decorations.
So where did this link between the dragon and Christmas arise? What ancient tradition spawned the Christmas dragon?
Er... there doesn't seem to be one! As far as I can tell there's no traditional or mythological link between dragons and Christmas. It's just that people like both of them, so it makes some sort
of sense to put them together - and dragons, when they're not burning and pillaging your village, can be rather cute! So we have a wealth of Christmas dragon lore such as Dragon's Merry Christmas by Dav Pilkey but it's all modern rather than ancient.
Still, there is one interesting link between dragons and the Christian Christmas: in 2006 a female komodo dragon hatched a clutch of virgin birth (parthogenesis) eggs at Chester Zoo in
the UK.
