DragonBall

DragonBall (sometimes "Dragon Ball") is the name for a series of manga/anime stories and associated spin-off products. Versions of DragonBall include the orginal series, Z, GT and the unofficial fan produced "AF".

The DragonBall phenomenom was created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. It is inspired by an old Chinese story of Sun Wukong the "Monkey King". "Dragon Ball" was initially published as a weekly comic book and continued until 1995.

The comic was so popular that an anime series was commissioned, first broadcast in 1986, followed shortly by the first feature film. The Dragon Ball TV series consisted of 153 half-hour episodes and produced many merchandising spin-offs, from figures and collectible cards to video games to buy for almost every popular console.

DragonBall Z

The original DragonBall was followed from 1989 by the anime DragonBall Z. This ran in Japan until 1996 and is probably the best known of the DragonBall franchise.

The anime series was an adaption of the second manga series, padding 12 pages of manga out into around 20 minutes of anime. As a result it has been accused of having more than its fair share of filler material.

DragonBall GT

The final (?) part of the DragonBall saga is the GT. Unlike the original series and Z, GT is not based directly on an Akira Toriyama manga.

The name "GT" is said to stand for "Grand Tour" although other options have been suggested. It is essentially a romp in space. It ran for only 64 episodes and is considered by many as "non canon" since it is not directly related to the Dragon Ball mana.
