Dragon Swords
Oriental dragons are noble creatures associated with good fortune and luck,
It is therefore unsurprising that dragon swords have long been popular
in the East.
Dragon swords are particularly associated with samurai.
A dragon sword is just an ordinary sword with a dragon motif carved into the hilt.
This carving can be simple or highly intricate, depending on whether the dragon
sword is intended primarily to be functional, decorative or ceremonial. A well-made, decorative
dragon sword is a work of art.
Any sword can be a dragon sword. Common types include dragon katana (a Japanese style
longsword used mainly for cutting) and dragon wazikashi (a shorter sword, often worn
together with the katana). It is also possible to get dragon tanto (a smaller sword still, more of a dagger).
Highlander
Dragon swords were popularised in the West by the film Highlander and
its subsequent sequels and spin-off TV series.
The official Highlander Sword of the Dragon was designed and is produced
by Marto of Spain. There are numerous "similar" swords available to buy from other
sources, as is to be expected these vary tremendously in quality.
The original Highlander sword was not in fact a dragon sword - it was simply
a faux ivory decorative katana created by Marto of Spain. The producers liked
the sword and decided to add a dragon head which would be more easily visible
on screen. Thus was born the MacLeod Sword of the Dragon.
For the really dedicated fan, it's even possible to buy a limited edition dragon katana
engraved with your name and Christopher Lambert's signature.
